On-Campus Housing
On-campus dormitories typically provide basic bedding, and a desk, and include a dining plan for meal purchases. The cost is typically included in the tuition fees.
Pitt on-campus housing typically offers accommodation for undergraduate students and provides basic bedding, a desk, and a dining plan included in the tuition fees (utilities included). Freshmen are required to live on campus, while sophomores and above usually need to enter a lottery system for room selection (once a person gets assigned, roommates in the same group can live together). Some buildings are designated for freshmen only, while others are reserved for sophomores and above. Most rooms are shared by multiple students (no individual rooms). The dining plan is mandatory and includes the purchase of a Dining Pass and Dining Dollars. Freshmen are required to purchase at least Tier 2 or higher (2020 price: $2,050 per semester). It is recommended to select the lowest tier of the Dining Pass that meets your needs. The following are four examples of on-campus dormitories:
Litchfield Tower
Certain floors are designated for freshmen, while others are for upperclassmen. Located in the central area of the main campus, there are three towers. Each room is equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. Each floor has 1-2 shared restrooms and shower areas, which are cleaned daily. There is a laundry room shared by all towers. The first floor houses Panther Central, which handles student IDs and housing matters and operates 24/7. The basement floor is the student dining area, known as Market Central.
Holland
Designated for freshmen only. Located next to Litchfield Tower in the central area of the main campus. Each room is equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. The top floor features a lounge/study area. The first floor houses the University Store, where students can purchase books, stationery, daily essentials, and souvenirs.
Nordenburg
Located across from Holland in the central area of the main campus. Each room is equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, and TV. Each floor has a shared laundry room. The first floor houses PNC, AT&T, and the Pitt Pharmacy.
Irvis Hall
Designated for upperclassmen. Located on the upper part of the campus, near the Petersen Events Center. Each room is a double occupancy with a private bathroom.
CMU on-campus housing provides furnished accommodations, and the cost is typically included in the tuition fees (utilities included). Freshmen are required to live on campus, and if they have a specific roommate preference, they need to provide the person’s Andrew ID. Sophomores and above, as well as graduate students, need to participate in a room selection process. Freshmen are also required to purchase the Traditional Dining Plan.
University-Owned Apartment
University-owned apartments operate under a management model separate from on-campus housing. They are not considered on-campus accommodations. Typically, school apartments are unfurnished, and residents are not required to purchase a dining pass. Rent is typically collected on a monthly basis.
Pitt University-owned apartments are available for both upperclassmen and graduate students.
- College Gardens: Open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty/staff members.
- Darragh Street: Reserved for graduate students. Hyacinth Place: Open to both undergraduate students and graduate students.
- Mayflower Apartments: Specifically designated for graduate students.
- Residences on Bigelow: The building was originally designed by Marriott. Residences on Bigelow features original hotel furnishings and is available for both undergraduate students and graduate students.
CMU does not provide on-campus apartments specifically for graduate students. Instead, they offer resources such as the Off-Campus Housing website for students to search for rental properties outside of the campus.
